The problem is, from the days of John Kennedy, that Catholicism was sold to the public as a progressive idea full of Jesus love and salvation. The truth is it was a claim that the universe is based on magic and only one, or a selected few can interpret the magic, and maybe control it.

That is almost the definition of gaslighting, the idea that if you can get many people to pretend or claim an idea that reasonable people will eventually go along, no matter how absurd the idea, and frankly nothing is more absurd than claiming that the universe is the parlor trick of a magical being. Yet so many accept it.
