While I agree mostly - there seem to be secular Catholics much like there are secular Jews. How they do it is beyond me but I guess it is like watching Peter Pan and not seeing the pedophilia or homo erotic elements. As Freud is apocryphally-quoted - "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar!". I guess people put it in a box and forget about it.

It is hard to let go of one's family or their values and rituals. I've lost the zeitgeist of Christmas as a child - it makes me sad and a bit empty and I let my children have the Santa dream. And as a belief, Christianity is no more absurd than Islam or any other faith based belief system. As I said 20+ years ago - my concerns about someone's "personal philosophy" are zero until they try to implement it as public policy. But this seems to be as the moth is to the flame more often than not. The true temptation of Christ was not that of giving in to the pleasures of the flesh but the commitment to bring down the social fabric by fervently proselytizing to others to accept his one personal truth. If we believe the story at all without the contemporary first-hand accounts, it seems more like the Scientology of Antiquity.

I suppose that the universe is F(x,y,z,t,a,b,c,...) but some people want to choose four or five of the variables and ignore even the possibility of any others. That is hubris in the extreme. A secular world finds the points of high influence and fits those.
