It is hard to let go of one's family or their values and rituals.

I don't think any group should give up their heritage, but that is a lot different than thinking that ancestors are eternally correct.

There is a meme that religious claims and faith claims should not be criticized. I think this concept is put forward by those who know that their claims would not stand up to scrutiny. The whole idea that there are are any claims of knowledge that cannot, and should not be examined is at the heart of much of the world's disfunction. That concept has to be broken before any of the repercussions of the concept can be solved.

So where is the ex-catholic organizations that offer anything but guilt. Where is the secular rituals of the Eucharist that explain the old but let the modern eat bread as bread and drink wine as, well whatever their ancestors drank. This distancing of ritual from magic is necessary if the chain of superstition is ever to be broken. I see this in Passover celebrations by secular Jews. There is a celebration of culture, an honoring of tradition, but none of the participants maintain that a magical entity flew around killing the first born of their enemies. The food gets more attention.
