Tae, Malone defined the market pretty narrowly. Here's another a cut at the market defined very very broadly...

"The market for outsourced LAN/WAN network management was estimated to be approximately $5 billion in 1996, and is projected to grow to approximately $11 billion in 2001, according to International Data Corp ("IDC")."

That's from the Micromuse prospectus (our G/co report on Micromuse will be released soon).

It appears that Visual Networks has a better, broader customer base, and has a head start in the reseller channel and is better positioned to be the leader. VNWK's Dec quarter sales were more than double Micromuse's (and 30% of Micromuse's sales came from its underwriter, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, which was also a co-underwriter for Visual Networks).

Best,
Francis
