Russell and the other NBA GOATs

<< RIP Bill Russell. Amazing that some don't include him high in their Top all-time NBA players list. Easy to say he may be the GOAT. >>

Bill is gone but not forgotten even though many of the sports journalists and commentators of today who are balloting for or collaborating in compiling NBA GOAT Lists never saw Bill play. The game has changed dramatically since the NBA adopted the 3-point shot in i979. As a consequence, the last 77 years is really divided into 2 very distinct eras that make it difficult to make comparisons between players of the 80s till today and their predecessors.

Living north of Boston in my grade school years, then in Boston in my college years I was a Celtics fan even before Bill started to play for them. In the years of Celtics dominance Hondo replaced Cousy as my favorite Celtic and Elgin Baylor became my favorite player. My interest in hoops declined considerably although not altogether after a move to Pittsburgh in '73 where Steelers' and Panthers' football ruled. No NBA team there then or now. I moved back East to a Philly burb in Delaware in '85 but although I follow the 76ers that's been a somewhat painful exercise. I still much prefer the NBA game of yesteryear over today's game.

Bill, Kareem and Wilt still populate most credible top 10 all-time lists ranking behind Michael Jordan and LeBron James who have 1 & 2 rightly locked. I'd place Bill at #3 followed by Kareem then Wilt but the sequencing varies from listing to listing. Magic and Bird are typically in the top 10. Kobe and Duncan are moving up and Steph will move up also displacing in some cases the Bg-O, Shaq and Hakeem. I do think Bill was the greatest all-time Team Leader and not just the greatest Winner. He led the Celtics from the moment he stepped on the parquet hardwood court of Boston Garden in December of 1986 after leading our Olympic Team to Gold in the Barcelona Summer Olympics.

This one is Typical: Hoops Hype: 75 greatest NBA players ever

1. Michael Jordan 2. LeBron James 3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 4. Magic Johnson 5. Bill Russell

hoopshype.com

It continues: 6. Wilt Chamberlain 7. Larry Bird 8. Kobe Bryant 9. Shaqille O'Neal 10, Tim Duncan

I'll add a few more GOAT lists shortly.
