On an unrelated note, it is said that the greatest tragedy in the evolution of modern democracy was the Norman Conquest. It crushed Saxon tribal law which allowed for the election of tribal leaders, none of whom had special right making them above the law. Elections were frequent, and leaders could be "recalled" at any time based on the judgement of each tribe. But among the tribes there was no elected and unifying leader either. Such a lack of inter-tribal unity lead to an easy conquest following the Battle of Hastings. A lesson for our times, perhaps. VP in AZ
