I'm surprised you're surprised, Roger Waters always had the rep of being intelligent, possibly crazy smart. There are others, Ray Davies (Kinks), Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground), Dylan....the list is fairly long just considering those who chose to highlight that aspect.

Somebody the Rolling Stones knows is pretty sharp, probably. I've heard Lady Gaga is off the charts smart, Madonna probably also.

Anyway....
