USWest is rolling out non-standard MVL and CAP based systems to 226 wire centers by June of '98. They should be given hearty applause. These systems work, and they provide higher bandwidth at flat-rate prices, just what customers are looking for. Consumers and businesses don't know CAP, DMT, MVL, or any of the other industry terminology. They only care about high bandwidth at lower prices. As far as a global scale is concerned, once the data signal gets to the CO, it makes no difference what is at the other end. Remember, this is a point to point circuit, not switched like analog or ISDN. I don't care what kind of signal arrives at my home--it can be a 2B1Q system from PairGain. As long as I finally get the bandwidth I want at a price I am willing to pay, that is all that counts. The UAWG spin about being ready by Christmas '98 is just more hogwash. Intel and Microsoft lost big time when they bet on ISDN a few years ago. Nothing makes me believe they will come up any better this time around with DSL-Lite. Telcos put in what makes sense for them, and in this case it seems Netspeed and Paradyne with non-standard line code makes lots of sense. I sure wouldn't want them to pull out an installation in my area if they had to wait for a "standard". I don't think you would either. Hip Hip Hurray for USWEST. A Telco that is finally making sense.
