When a political system is in disarray and it seems like nothing works, and the ruling elites cannot do a darn thing right - opportunities arise for authoritarian rulers and oligarchies. Founders of the Roman Republic were smart - and designed a system that served well for 500 years. Stalin didn’t happen by accident - ever since the French Revolution, Russia had a great number of revolutionary political movements, a number of them violent. Lenin’s older brother was hung for participating in an attempt to assassinate the Tsar (interestingly, he didn’t have to die - all he had to do was sign a letter requesting clemency. True to his convictions, the teenager refused).
