Nail clipping is a problem with some dogs. I know from experience. It usually starts with hitting the quick. Easily done on dogs with black nails.

Cheap clippers add to the problem. They squeeze instead of cutting.

Best methods I have come up with ...
Trim nails after a long walk. Have one person schmoozing up to the dog while the other one goes to town.
The more often you do it, the more acceptable it will become for the dog.
