You have it wrong. Ukraine thought Joe10%, Hunter, Obama, Nuland, Graham, and co had a great idea to annex Luhansk, Donetsk, Crimea in exchange for oodles of $boodles, along with jets, Javelins, artillery and such fun and kill any recalcitrant Russians.
The swindling, corruption and theft were great fun with $billions in profit. Now gushing by the $10 billion.
The USA politicians got loot galore and planned to surround Moscow even tighter, kicking Russia out of Sevastopol and Crimea ready for Barbarossa II, The Charge of the Light Brigade and the 1812 Overture = none of which ended well.
Russia did not like the idea. Neither did the Russians stuck in Ukraine in those autonomous countries.
Your analogy with Taiwan is wrong. Russia is helping Donetsk, Luhansk, Mariupol, Crimea get independence from Zelensky and murderous Azov goons. Crimea opting for being part of Russia, understandably.
USA is helping Taiwan be free of the goons in Beijing who make the Azovs look like amateurs.
Russia giving up Sevastopol and Crimea would be like USA giving up Pearl Harbour and Hawaii, and maybe San Diego naval base, air bases and Camp Pendleton to Mexico. That's not going to happen.
My plan is to conquer Hawaii and return it to Cook Islands, New Zealand and the Polynesian realm. It would be nice to have Hawaii back as winters here are too cold, dark, wet and windy.
