Ok thanks. The refund just hit the account today, so hopefully there is an explanation letter on its way.

We also have an odd situation where in May 2022 we received a letter from the IRS that we owe a $1,700 penalty. The penalty stems from an event which occurred in August 2020, and the penalty is for late payment of taxes incurred in that August 2020 event.

However, since we always pay forecast taxes quarterly, in August 2020 we had a CREDIT with the IRS that was more than $1,700.

So......why didn't they just charge the penalty against the credit?

Why did they charge the penalty in May 2022 rather than in calendar year 2020 when they discovered the alleged penalty?

And, in the recently refunded amount, did they deduct the $1,700 penalty, or not? The difference between our expectations and the refund is about $1,500, which is close to $1,700, but it's not $1,700. So.....what's going on?

We got no idea!

We will await their letter......
