Thanks. Inpainting is the proper term for object removal. It comes from the fact that the software masks the object and then starts interpolating/painting inside that mask based on the surrounding and similar areas.

Retouching is an old (film era) generic term for any kind of soft manipulation of an image, which could but was not limited to painting on the negative or the image. In that sense even selectively lightening the shadows qualified as retouching.
