In the end I did get distracted and rather than the last season of Better Call Saul, I started in on German crime series consisting of, so far, six TV movies with the word Erzgebirgskrimi in the title. Erzgebirg is a very interesting setting, in the mountains in the south of what used to be East Germany. It is both traditional and a bit stodgy in the way rural backwaters can be, but also the site of mines that used to supply most of the uranium for the Soviet Union and its allies, mines that may be reopened, so it also has a foot in the present and future. A big theme is locals leaving for the cities, which is regarded with suspicion by those who remain, but also those who return, which is regarded with even more suspicion.

Last night I watched the first two, which was kind of odd because the central character, a police detective was replaced between the episodes, but in the end the scripts and the setting are interesting enough that I will continue on.

Unfortunately it may be hard for you to find this series. I got mine from a private source with fansubs, and a limited search revealed no commercial sources. That said, IMO it will be worth the effort if you are able to find a source.
