Wasn't Ukraine way back when a territory of Mother Russia?

My grandparents came over to the states in 1905 thru Ellis Island and the
place they came from is stated as Vilnius, Russia!

We were taught in grade school back in the very early 60's
that Ukraine was the breadbasket of Russia/Europe.
