The Geo Metro test car was professionally assembled and very
clean and polished. There was an arrangement of three fuel
beakers and an electronic scales in the trunk to measure the
fuel consumption. There was extra instrumentation in the
dash, including a couple of vacuum guages or air flow meters.
BAT also ran the Magnum sportscar, giving some of the VIPs
rides around the track. BAT rented a U-haul van and trailer to
move their vehicle to the track. They supplied a luncheon buffet
to the spectators. I think that they are quite serious about this
business, but that it must progress one small step at a time. I
asked Mr. LaStella some pointed questions about exhaust gas
temperature and fuels and whether the engine used recombinant
energy technology. He said that BAT was working on an engine
using that technology but it was not in the test vehicle, which is
a diesel, running on #2 diesel. He said that the engine did
not use either sparkplugs or glowplugs. Mr. LaStella said that the EGT sensor was down in the collector where the temperature was only about 500 degrees. He said that the pulse technology provided extra
air to internally cool the pistons. He said that the engine definitely used aluminum pistons, and that he was a graduate of the Detroit Diesel school. He said that nothing of the technology would be disclosed because it was not yet patented and we discussed the rigorous process of getting an idea from initial concept to the final patent. He said that he had fought one patent lawsuit for thirteen years. We discussed the Barron's article, the Stock Detective article, and the hype on the internet. Clearly, Mr. LaStella has his point of view which
differs from the intrepretation of his interviewers. The BAT consortium
is far-flung and complex, and Mr. LaStella must manage the company
and all of its public relations. He seems to be quite calm and confident.
I tried to find out what revenues BAT would receive from the Skoda
Elcar agreement. He told me that a letter of intent has far more
significance in Europe than it has in this country. He said that there
was a ceremony at the signing there. But the conversation moved
from specific dollar revenues to what the value of the contract to
build batteries was worth. Value and revenue are two different
things. I had hoped to learn specifically what revenues BAT would
receive and I did not. Mr LaStella asked me if I was familiar with
the methods of Socrates in teaching his pupils. I told him that I
was completely familiar with Socratic Irony, which seeks to show
the student that the answer to all of his questions is already in the
student's mind, and that the student must just realize the answer.
However, I would not have asked about revenues if I knew the
answer. And the bottom line is, I never got an answer to the revenue
question.
