Marcos; I will ask my broker about this. Pressure for a computer based matching service is getting stronger. Why should a broker who feeds on the spread and commission exist at all. With an automated order matcher machine we could all see what was on offer and what was wanted and at what price and we could then either meet the price and buy/sell or adjust our offer to buy/sell and hope that another would also adjust until a deal made. The broker also holds the stock and acts as the enforcer of the exchange so there can be no 'welching' on a deal. So some mechanism is needed, probably electronic/real deposition of your stock with the electronic exchange would do it. After all you rarely need the actual certificates, so leave them at the exchange.

I suspect the Nasdaq will fight this to the end, it is just a broker association, and a greedy one at that. I suspect that electronic exchanges will emerge and run in parallel to the exchanges and compete them away/smaller over time.

I have heard that there are some fledglinf electronic exchanges now??, do you know of any??
