Sometimes it's fairly clear and easy. For example, some land was taken by the NZ government during WWII from some Maoris in Raglan for the purpose of a military airport under the public works act. Payment of market value is made in such circumstances. After the war, the land was not returned and was turned into a golf course.

A few decades later, the previous owners wanted it returned. That was done [I doubt compensation by Maori claimants was given but maybe it was part of a larger settlement]. The golf course without maintenance turned back to jungle of no value. That was what I heard a few decades ago, so maybe things are different there now and maybe the details are wrong.

They write there that it was for an air base in WWI but with no aircraft then, that can't be right. But more or less, near enough as they write.
Unless there's a clear property right, it's hopeless.

Negroes sold by their compatriots in Nigeria etc 200 years ago got a better time of it than they'd likely have got remaining as slaves in Nigeria. Maori slaves were even killed and eaten, so it would be much better to be sold to American farmers [including other Negroes] who would be keen to keep their productive workers alive.

Those African slaves' descendants have won the jackpot = Americans with GDP per person orders of magnitude more than Nigerian slaves. They should pay the other Americans for having been so lucky as to have had slave ancestors instead of their ancestors being killed or remaining slaves in Africa.

They are whining like Koreans whining like a fleet of 747s about Qualcomm royalties, which was very loud. Both should be grateful. Worship would even be in order. Maybe kneeling towards the Statue of Liberty or Qualcomm = 5 times per day. That's taking a knee that would make sense.
