BuzzVA,

Seagte's investments in software companies followed the arrival at Seagate of Steve Luczo as V.P. Business Development. Seagate's acquisitions of CDC, Archive, and Conner all were in the OEM device business (hence low margin). The press releases at the time the software investments were made muttered something about synergy with data storage but I have always felt it was a margin play. As for revolution vs. evolution Seagate has never had a large legacy of disk drive design innovation frankly, aside from the ST506 which was truly different (years ago). There acquisition of CDC sent them in that direction, but more recently they missed the curve again. I think they are trying to strengthen that with the establishment of a research center last year.
Best,
Stitch
