Desperate firms lure tech-savvy students with big bucks, perks:
Shayne Bateman had half a dozen offers when he graduated last year with a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. The lowest salary offer was $38,000, not including bonuses. The 26-year-old chose to go to the Corel Corp. in Orem, Utah, where he works as a Java programmer.

The work is challenging and exciting, he says. And the perks are great: such as the computer the company gave him for home use, the $150-a-month health club reimbursement, and the quarterly bonuses, each as much as 5 percent of his salary, which he declined to disclose. He's happy -- for now. If he's not happy later, he'll go elsewhere.
