SpaceX: The 800lb Gorilla in the room

T-Mobile phones will connect to Starlink for free starting next year

techcrunch.com

"T-Mobile and SpaceX have announced that Starlink satellites launched next year will be able to connect directly to the carrier’s phones over existing cellular bands. The companies hope to enable global roaming wherever satellite coverage exists, and the service may potentially be added for free to existing T-Mobile plans.

SpaceX’s Elon Musk and T-Mobile’s Mike Sievert announced the “technology alliance” at the space company’s Starbase in Texas.

“It’s a lot like putting a cellular tower in the sky, just a lot harder,” said Sievert. “Your phone doesn’t really know it’s connecting for space. It’ll think it’s connected to a cell tower, because that phone is using industry standard technology communication protocols and it has the spectrum already built in, as the vast majority of phones in circulation today do.”

Though both executives emphasized the “profundity” of the announcement, it isn’t exactly without precedent. In fact this is exactly what Lynk demonstrated last year with its still operational test satellite — the startup plans to provide emergency messaging and alerts across the globe from a small constellation. (“Having Elon validate this as a service is great. It’s a huge need, a huge market and a huge validation,” Lynk founder Charles Miller told me after the announcement. He also pointed out that they have patents and an FCC license, so we’ll see how that goes."

The concept of this should make MSS operators very nervous. It essentially creates a platform where much of the portfollio of terrestrial CMRS spectrum, also becomes Satellite Spectrum. TMobile may talk about SOS Emergency Services and texting to COTS smartphones. But, their eye is on Satellite IoT. A huge, projected multi-Billion dollar market going forward. However, the real disruptor will be the IoT devices themselves. Suddenly, Satellite IoT devices can be produced from "Mass Market" (read Economics of Scale) parts used in building super cheap cell phones. Chinese firms can churn these out for dollars instead of tens or hundreds of dollars from traditional MSS/Satellite IoT device providers. Other Telco operators in International Markets will understand the $$ volume in adding these services to their product portfilio and follow suit with TMobile and line up behind Starlink/SpaceX.
