The realpolitic of it is that the Russian majority Crimea and Eastern Ukraine were slapped on to the Soviet Republic of Ukraine by dirty commie functionaries, like Khruschov and Lenin. Why? Read that Lenin did it for the same reason as the previous Russian Emperors did - Russification. They wanted to dilute and divide the Ukrainian people, which they successfully accomplished. Except that the fall of the USSR created some untenable situations, liable to end it all.
It seems that the greatest beneficiaries of the Westphalian Sovereign states are political power maniacs of all stripes.
Some time in the 90’s, a guy by the name Davidson, in partnership with a lord Reese Moggs (the father of the current prominent British politician) wrote a book called “The Sovereign Individual”. In that book, they promoted the idea of getting rid of big states (in effect, playthings of politicians). Allow any group of people - United by their politics, or ethnicity - or anything else - to form sovereign jurisdictions, with their own laws, governments, etc. like, the ultimate state rights situation - except, it could end up much smaller than states. If anyone doesn’t like the way things are done in some particular location - simply move elsewhere. End of story.
In the book it’s a lot more elaborated, security issues are addressed, but that’s the general idea.
It’s pure fantasy, but there is much to it. All those big states and big governments, ultimately, are far, far more trouble than they’re worth. |
