Why the Kigali Amendment Should Help Our Climate

Dear Diary. What’s getting lost this week due to climate change storm mayhem is the fact that an important treaty got ratified by the U.S. Senate, and with wide bipartisan support. The treaty, known as the Kigali Amendment, is party of the Montreal Protocol, which phases out potent hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, which are hundreds to thousands of times as powerful as carbon dioxide in speeding up climate change. Originally passed in 1987, the Montreal Protocol was passed to protect the planet’s delicate ozone layer.
