You're responding to a guy describing how Canadians have to leave the country to get medical services Americans take for granted (like a hip or knee replacement) by claiming a homeless alcoholic in America gets the same treatment as a billionaire.

Maybe at the door of a hospital, in cardiac arrest, the homeless guy and billionaire get equal treatment. But as soon as the patient regains consciousness, the homeless guy is released back to the street and the billionaire has a team of world-class cardiologists and heart surgeons laying out options. And isn't that the American way -- if you have the money, you're free to buy whatever money can buy?

You say, "The system...provides zero routine care." What are you talking about? I'm going to keep staying out of hospitals to the best of my ability. If I need "routine care", I'd rather see a doctor in their office rather than a hospital. And I do, whenever I want.

As for the murky hospital pricing, some of that comes from the way health insurance became involved in every transaction, with contracts negotiated in advance between every insurer and hospital chain. Also, the chairman of the board of a local charitable hospital told me his #1 concern was making sure the hospital didn't get sued for killing someone. So blame the U.S. tort system.
