So you want to respond to a Russian nuke blast with conventional forces. And what do we do when he responds with more nukes?

It would make more sense to go for a nuclear decapitation strike on Russia. Since you're going to get there anyway as step 2 or 3.

Note: I'm not advocating that but you are whether you admit it or not.
