There are 3 chronic problems with the US foreign policy:

(1) There is no feedback loop between the consequences and the decision makers

(2) The US has always been prone to what I call "rent a superpower" trap. Essentially a "friendly" foreign power pushes the US to do their dirty work for them. Since the decision makers won't have to face the consequences, but get to rep the rewards, it is very appealing. Examples include Brits pushing the US to overthrow the Iranian government, the Australians putting their thumb on the scale to be involved in Vietnam, Israelis...well let's not go there <g>

(3) The short term nature of US political apparatus does not allow for maturity.
