MARKET ACTIVITY

HOT STOCKS

Abacan Resources (ABC/TSE) shares closed down $0.30 to $3.25 on high share volume. Trading was also active on Monday when shares finished up $0.50 on high volume. The company reported well results yesterday (see International Companies) and was also in the news (see feature story).

Green River Petroleum (GRP/ASE) and HEDGO Canada (HEG/ASE) continue to be the volume leaders on the Alberta Stock Exchange. Green River fell $0.08 to $1.27 and HEGCO fell $0.11 to $2.99.

INDEXES

The Toronto Stock Exchange 300 Composite Index gained 0.5% or 34.63 to 6881.49. In comparison, the Oil & Gas Composite Index gained 0.6% or 40.20 to 6394.69. Among the sub-components, the Integrated Oil's gained 0.8% or 72.45 to 8926.05. The Oil & Gas Producers rose 0.6% or 32.42 to 5596.85 and the Oil & Gas Services gained 0.3% or 9.61 to 2761.80.

MOST ACTIVES

Norcen Energy Resources, Abacan Resources, Ranger Oil, Anderson Exploration, Renaissance Energy and Petro-Canada were among the 50 most active traded issues on the TSE.

Pioneer Nat Res. Canada gained $1.50 to $32.50, Seven Seas Petroleum (U) $1.40 to $19.25, Imperial Oil $0.90 to $84.80 and Suncor Energy $0.90 to $50.60.

Percentage gainers included United Tri Star 14.9% to $1.00, New Cache Petroleum 14.9% to $1.00, OGY Petroleum 11.1% to $1.40, Maxx Petroleum 10.3% to $1.82, Optima Petroleum 9.5% to $2.30, Oiltec Resources 9.0% to $2.67, Seven Seas Petroleum (U) 7.8% to $19.25, Westfort Energy 7.0% to $1.23, Paragon Petroleum 6.8% to $3.90 and Petrorep Resources 6.5% to $1.15.

On the downside, PanCanadian Petroleum fell $0.55 to $21.10, Pinnacle Resources $0.50 to $13.40 and Baytex Energy $0.40 to $14.80.

Percentage losers included Ram Petroleum 10.3% to $1.30, Petrobank 9.8% to $2.75, Abacan Resources 8.5% to $3.25, Black Rock Ventures 7.4% to $1.25, Magin Energy 7.0% to $2.00, Renata Resources 6.7% to $1.40, Black Sea Energy 6.5% to $1.45 and Richland Petroleum 6.3% to $3.75.

No new 52-week highs.

Interaction Resources, Pinnacle Resources and Pursuit Resources reached new 52-week lows.

Services companies were absent from the top 50 most active issues on the TSE.

There were also no net gainers among the top 50 issues.

Percentage gainers included Inter-Tech Drilling 10.0% to $1.10, Plains Energy Services 7.1% to $9.00 and Petro Well Energy 6.8% to $1.26.

On the downside, Shaw Industries A fell $1.00 to $44.00.

No percentage losers.

No new 52-week highs or lows.

Over on the Alberta Stock Exchange, Green River Petroleum, HEGCO Canada, Raptor Capital, Bearcat Exploration, Nycan Petroleum, Stampede Oils, EMR Microwave, Colony Energy, Colt Energy, Destiny Resource Services, Oxbow Exploration and Storm Energy were among the top 30 most active traded issues.

Brandon Energy gained $0.34 to $0.64, Lodestar Energy $0.30 to $2.30, Redeco Energy $0.15 to $0.75, Q Energy $0.13 to $0.33, Belfast Petroleum $0.10 to $2.45, Corridor Resources $0.10 to $1.30, Global Link International $0.10 to $1.10, Ascot Energy Resources $0.09 to $0.24 and Blackpool Exploration $0.07 to $0.15.

Percentage gainers included Brandon Energy 113.3% to $0.64, Q Energy 65.0% to $0.33, Redeco Energy 25.0% to $0.75, Carpatsky Petroleum 16.0% to $0.29, Lodestar Energy 15.0% to $2.30 and Stampede Oils 10.7% to $0.31.
