"German security officials say they believe that both Nord Stream gas pipeline systems could be damaged beyond repair."

Steel Pipelines, such as the one used for NORD STREAM 1 & 2, have an Internal Mortar lining or, at the very least, an Epoxy, or similar, lining. So whether or not sea water has entered the pipe will not cause "rusting" or corrosion of the pipe.
This mortar lining is applied Centrifugally to the inside of the pipe ---->

In addition there is a small aggregate Concrete weight and protection coat applied to the outside of such pipes. This reduces the Buoyancy of the pipe as it is placed on the sea bed, as well as protecting the outside of the steel pipe.
All of the above is to ensure the future integrity of such a Steel Pipeline.

A Pipeline, such as Nord Stream 2, would have been laid on the Baltic sea bed using a very specialized piece of Marine equipment called a "LAY BARGE" ----->

The steel pipe is delivered in sections using a pipe supply barge which feeds the Lay Barge with pipe lengths. These pipes are welded to the end of the pipeline on the Lay Barge and the pipeline is lowered into the sea as the Lay Barge moves forward continuously ----->

Needless to say, the pipe lengths are in a very corrosive environment as they lie on the supply barge, with wind an sea spray an ongoing presence ........ So I have to wonder what these "German security officials" actually know about fabricating, protecting and laying of coated pipe on the sea bed as was the case with the NORD STREAM pipelines ???!!!

AND ........... Pipelines that have been damaged, as they lie on the sea bed, can certainly be repaired as one can see in this Video. This is not the only way that it can be done. Therefore this does not necessarily mean the end of the NORD STREAM Pipelines going forward ----->
