VIX doesn't work all the time. Better indicators can be created from the VIX term structure; they suggest the markets are close to a bottom.

11 day and 21 day trends are weakening (bending - ride the trend until it bends)

Finally, my 30 day net volume indicator (a better On Balance Volume) may have bottomed today (daily S&P futs chart).
Other bottoms - Sept 6th and June 16th
