The events in 2014 in Odessa were preceded by the invasion from Russia, they were not the cause. The attempted breakaway of Odessa was as fake as the referendums of Donetsk. All this fighting is unfortunate, but it was then, as it is now, instigated by Russia and is not some sort of Ukrainian civil war.

As to Russia being surrounded by NATO. Putin is making that more likely.
