And if Ukraine was part of NATO there would be non-nuclear missiles in Ukraine, not nuclear ones, it wouldn't make much sense to put them that close to what would be the front line.
Maybe so - but only until the moment when Biden - or someone else in his shoes - issues an order to move the nukes East. And boom! you would have nukes aimed at Moscow from points east of Moscow, just like that.

Why allow unneeded instabilities and fault points in a geopolitical balance that is so fragile as it is? This is exactly the reason why Russia is fighting right now - because with Ukraine in NATO - or even in very close, “brotherly” cooperation with NATO - it would be a big fat nuclear powder keg.

It would be merely a matter of time until something goes wrong.

Except next time there would be no Ukraine “preliminaries” - the war would be far more likely to start off with nukes.

Ukraine must be neutral.

Ukraine was - and could still be - in a position to trade left and right and become prosperous. A large country, with excellent land, enough resources and an educated population (with enough engineers who know as much as anyone about nukes as anyone) — why the heck did they need this bloody war that is wrecking their country?

Answer - for the same reason why their economy hardly grew compared to the Soviet times — corruption -- and absence of an effective democracy. Political idiots and extremists have all the power -- and in turn, they serve a) their own greed, and b) foreign interests (as seen by self serving greedy foreign oligarchs and paper pushers).
