House finches are found throughout the US now. But were originally [pre-1940] native to Mexico and the southwestern US.

The birds were sold illegally in New York City as "Hollywood Finches". To avoid prosecution under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, vendors and owners released the birds on Long Island. They have since become naturalized; in largely unforested land across the eastern U.S., they have displaced the native purple finch and even the non-native house sparrow.

The red coloration of males is produced from carotenoid pigments in the birds' diet. Male House Finches develop brighter plumage when they are growing in new feathers, if they eat more fruits containing carotenoids.
