After he lost the election, Trump told Nikki Haley, he was gonna pull out of the R party and start his own party. Said the R's deserved it for not keeping him in office despite his loss. He backed down when she told him the R party would stop paying his legal bills.

He's stayed a R officially but only because they were paying him.

He took over the party anyway but he wants them to lose to pay them back.
