I see 2 possibilities. 1) Russia wins,
Even if Russia "wins" militarily, what will the cost have been? 10's of thousands of casualties, $billions in equipment destroyed or consumed, continuing sanctions, and perhaps most important a huge loss of military reputation. Who will fear Russia in the next 10-20 years?
What will they gain? Control of a little territory which they bombed to rubble.
That is a big cost for a war of choice.
