Well, it’s been an interesting week, for two related aspects of the market and the portfolios.. And for some of the contestants exciting, even.

Once again, the Biotech indices “outperform" the broader index. The NASDAQ Biotech index managed a 1% gain for two weeks in a row. It’s YTD performance, is la loss of only -19% compared to the broader NASDAQ index which has dropped -32%.

In terms of individual stocks, the obvious big news is IMUX posting a gain go +152%!, which brings their price back to just over what it was at the start of the year. Apparently this is the reaction to an oversubscription for a recent private placement recapitalization. This should make four contestants happy, as we’ll see in a bit. The big loser for the week was the ever familiar GNCA, down another -93%, so now an investor of $100 at the start of year would have, mmmm, gone from just over two quarters and a dime to jingle in their pocket the previous week to about four pennies (which won’t even jingle given their plastic core).

For the portfolios, generally, another per cent or so slide for this week. YTD both the average and median portfolios are bleeding more than the broad NASDAQ Composite or the worst of the bio-tech indices. After IMUX’s gain, the second piece of “interesting” is in our top ten YTD portfolios. Though nobody joined or returned to the list this week, there has been some mixing of the relative standings. DIEGOSAN still in first, but second and third place are now BRENDAN_49 and HORSEINALFALFA. No prize for guessing that they bought IMUX at the start of the year, earning them the first and third place portfolios for last week.performing portfolios. BRENDAN_49’s owes his gain of more than 16% for the week due to “doubling down” on IMUX, with a twenty percent share of his initial portfolio. The standing of the previous second and third place finishers was not helped by their holding RVNC, which although not in the list of big losers for the week, has shown a steady downward slide since their recent big bump, and is no longer in the top five YTD performing stocks.

As the weather starts to turn pleasingly chilly (in DC anyway), it tells us to start thinking about the biotech investing opportunities for the next year. There will have to be opportunities (generally finishing in the black) next year, right? As a Red Sox fan of the sixties, seventies, and eighties, I’m all too familiar with the phrase “Wait til next year!”, but it can come true.
