Lots of reasons for tariffs. Slow them down to get our industries built back up. Get their industries to live by increased standards. Get steel and whatnot produced to quality standards that are not dangerous. Get reliable electronic products that don't come with backdoor spy modems built-in.

When the government is the backer of an industry and sets out to destroy competition, that's not really competing. That's economic warfare. Tariffs are the way to fight back on that front without getting to the nasty business.

Tariffs can be applied to problem industries that undercut ours for things we rely on. Good thing we don't rely on solar panels - I read that China produces 80% or more of them. Why should we start increasing that reliance to a higher degree? Oh yeah, Solyndra. We can't compete. Too greedy. That's what happens when we start emulating China's corrupt practices.
