A bit of unpleasant news: According to the wire below, SGI has to fight HP and others for a meager 22% of the web hosting server market.
[In spite of the record breaking WebForce platform? Say it ain't so!]

Compaq to Lead in Marketshare of Web Host Servers

Six of Eight Top Internet Service Providers Choose Compaq

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1998--Compaq
Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) is slated to be the
premier provider of industry-standard Web hosting servers for
leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in 1998. That conclusion
is the result of a survey of ISPs by Infonetics Research, an
independent industry research firm. The ISPs projected their
planned purchases for 1998, giving Compaq ProLiant servers 40
percent of new purchases, followed by Sun at 38 percent, and
the remaining 22 percent made up of various other computer
companies including Digital, Hewlett-Packard and Silicon
Graphics.(a)

''Compaq is clearly the dominant Windows NT server provider
to the ISP market,'' said Infonetics Research CEO, Michael
Howard. ''They have gained a large portion of the growing ISP
Windows NT server population. This survey included all
operating systems, so Compaq's projected share of the Windows
NT only market is expected to be much higher.''

Compaq has been selected by six of eight top ISPs ranked by
Forrester Research(b). These companies include CompuServe,
DIGEX, GTE Internetworking (BBN), MCI, Netcom and UUNET
-- all of whom have standardized on Compaq ProLiant servers
for Windows NT-based hosting services.

''Compaq is the preferred Web management solution because
the leading ISPs recognize that the manageability, reliability and
performance of Compaq servers provide the best solution for
business critical Web hosting,'' said Mike Heil, Vice President
and General Manager for Compaq North America.

In its report, Infonetics Research found that in 1998 ISPs are
expected to purchase, on average, double the number of servers
they purchased in all of 1997. For the first time, the highest
percentage of these purchases will be Compaq ProLiant
platforms. ''There's really been momentum industry-wide for
Web-hosting services on Windows NT Server, particularly
where it's the client's enterprise standard,'' said David Foster,
vice president and general manager of the Web Server Services
Business Unit at UUNET. ''Customers want their Web servers to
work seamlessly with all components of Windows NT Server
and other Microsoft BackOffice products.''

''It should come as no surprise to anyone that Compaq has been
extraordinarily successful in this market since we have focused
our efforts on offering industry-standard servers -- such as our
ProLiant 850R -- that match perfectly with the needs of our ISP
customers,'' said Ronnie Ward, Vice President and General
Manager for Compaq's Enterprise Solutions Division.
''Moreover, our solutions take the risk out of integration with
existing applications and networks, and protect our customers'
investments.''

DIGEX, an ISP that manages one of the world's largest Web
hosting facilities, has standardized on Compaq. ''DIGEX
specializes in delivering high-end, mission-critical Web-site
management services to corporations throughout the country,''
said Earl Galleher, President, DIGEX's Web Site Management
Group. ''To ensure that our customers receive the most reliable
Web site management solutions, we selected Compaq as our
exclusive Windows NT hardware platform.''

GTE Internetworking (BBN), another leading hosting provider,
listed the ability to remotely manage the server as a top reason
they selected Compaq, as GTE manages 12 globally distributed
hosting centers. ''We're implementing Tivoli management
software to manage thousands of servers distributed
worldwide. Coupled with Compaq's Remote Insight Board, this
solution allows us to efficiently manage servers in several
different geographic locations, and ensure maximum
performance and uptime for our clients,'' said Warren Recicar,
vice president of infrastructure operations for GTE
Internetworking (BBN).
