Some thoughts on longer boules
  • During boule growth process there can be many hours hours of sacrificial growth at beginning to get rid of impurities. So making them longer creates a larger percentage of usable boule and thus lowers cost. So a positive they are communicating their attempts to improve cost.
  • Yields got blamed on backend processing, kind of implied something like boule slicing. Defects such as dislocations typically change as a function of length and meeting those requirements can limit length. So wafers at the longest length not meeting all of the requirements is probably part of issue but not sure why that would be called backend. That could easily effect yields for devices. Would think they could just cut boule in half if slicing was not capable of length.
  • This must have been planned if it is implemented at such a scale. It even came up in STM call. Seems to make new materials fab a parallel path. Rushing multiple paths implies some sort of risk is trying to be burned down from a risk register. With MVF seeming to see a large pushout in schedule have to question whether they have the material yield and scale to ramp it.
