My father was a sales representative for Lederle, the company that first commercialized antibiotics at the end of WW2. They discovered Tetracycline. At any rate he had access to sales data which detailed which parts of the state used antibiotics and which didn't. He would visit both areas to either to fill orders or make his pitch. In the summers I went with him and heard many of the conversations.

The standard 'cure' for urinary infections in those places where pharmaceuticals were viewed with suspicion was high acid drinks. If a family could afford it these would be orange juice or cranberry juice. For the poor community it was a drink of water with apple cider vinegar.

Many of the doctors would hedge their bets by giving antibiotics with a high acid beverage. This caused problems, especially with grapefruit which interacted with the medicine. This led to angry doctors who talked a lot like the Covid Vaccine deniers who get a vaccine and big bunch of parasite pills and wonder why they are feeling sicker. I absorbed a lot of information on those trips, but didn't make sense of it for decades.
