What I'm curious to know is whether they previously held any position in ASND, or this 6.8% stake is a completely new one?

The stake is not completely new, but it is orders of magnitude in excess of the prior position. The following information is taken from my earlier post which listed institutional ownership of ASND as of 9/30/97:
Capital Guardian (a subsidiary, same as listed in the new 13G) held 410,000 shares (down 2,526,900 from prior quarter)
Capital Int'l SA (a subsidiary, same as listed in the new 13G) held 148,700 shares (down 229,100 from prior quarter)
Capital Int'l Ltd. (a subsidiary, same as listed in the new 13G) held 122,000 shares (down 128,900 from prior quarter)
In sum, as of 9/30/97, Capital Group held 680,700 shares, down from 3,465,600 shares as of 6/30/97 (i.e., the decrease from 2Q to 3Q was 80%).
Also in sum, they just increased their position by 1,779 percent.
