Yes, flying is infinitely safer than getting to the airport by road. I was in a plane once that lost one of its two engines climbing up through 10,000 feet then slid around the sky for a while until we returned to the airport to land safely (we didn't know what had happened or if we would crash).

But flying was essential to my work and life then, and I won't give it up a few times per year now. The benefits far outweigh any marginal harm to the world, since I am just a gnat fart in the great scheme of things.
