You have to look at what the individuals running say is their position. The individuals will eventually form the party position which may start out defensive (i.e. "let the States decide") where it is easier to erode rights at the state level then when they get power, then can hope to make it illegal at the national level.

Think of it as gun control in reverse.... where we have the strongest gun laws in the blue states and still have the most dangerous cities since the criminals "they" refuse to keep in jail don't care about following all the rules.

Here in CA, the DNC will put dark money into the most conservative, far right candidate so their frontrunners will have an easy time in the general elections. Since 2000, I think the only time this failed is when Arnold the Governator's name recognition was so large that they couldn't spend enough to beat him.
