I made the sacrifice so you don't have to.

I watched all three episodes of the recent Mexican series Belascoarán, PI. It's about a not very charming fellow who quits his corporate job, starts calling himself an 'independent detective', and takes on cases he finds interesting for no pay, usually ending up battling corrupt police and the like. I don't think it made good enough use of its setting in Mexico City and over the three episodes the series really loses steam.

Oh, and it's set in the 1970s so there is way too much smoking.

Not everyone smoked in the '70s!

I can't remember if I mentioned here that I tried Magic City and lasted one episode and about 10 minutes. I quit because the story was so predictable and because there was way too much smoking, particularly cigars. Even imagining the reek raises my gorge.

Smoking is not a useful replacement for actual acting in terms of portraying a character. I would point to Mad Men as a series that used smoking to good effect.
