DNAP is caught in the tobacco firestorm
Russ Hoyle

Life has not been the same at DNA Plant Technology Corp. (DNAP; Oakland, CA) since June 1994, when US officials, including former federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Rockville, MD) commissioner David A. Kessler and then-Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, all but accused DNAP of conspiring to genetically engineer a high-nicotine strain of tobacco for the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., the British-based cigarette maker. From the outset, DNAP denied the charges, though it admitted that its researchers had helped develop a seedless version of the controversial strain for Brown & Williamson. Nonetheless, DNAP was swept up in the political firestorm over manipulation of nicotine content by the tobacco industry that has since consumed cigarette makers and raised the specter of FDA regulation.
