There are many orders of magnitude between giving the appearance of “learning” and actually learning.

I look at where this technology is today and remember discussing these ideas with co-workers in the late 70s, and I’m pretty sure the status of AI/ML today would have convinced us that it was around the corner. But when you look at the software internally I don’t think we would have been quite as impressed.

I will say that the progress of the computer's ability to do linear algebra calculation is astounding, and it’s importance to these systems is critical. For this we can thank gamers who demanded ever faster graphics performance.

At any rate I don’t think true sentience is on the horizon. But does it matter, if you know, we can’t really tell the difference in most instances?

I heard a great interview by Joe Rogan with the inventor of Mosaic (the first real web browser) Marc Andreeson some months ago. He got into this topic of sentience with Joe, who was concerned about it. The guy had really given it a lot of thought imo, and addressed it wonderfully. If you can find that interview (#1840 of Joe's shows) lots of cool topics in there.
