It is not ignorance. It is a willful desire not to know. The reason is obvious: man has a herd animal side and this applies to his thoughts as well as his social relationships. There is the conservative side of looking at things and the liberal side. Those who are liberal and conservative have formed groups to the exclusion of the other to enhance their knowledge of the group they have chosen. The other side has become the enemy for both groups and must be rejected. This is nowhere more prevalent than on SI, where moderators, whether conservative or liberal ban members from the opposing group and want nothing to do with them. I know you have experienced this and so have I, along with many others. What is most striking in my case is that I routinely get banned from both sides from offering constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is not allowed.

On a national level, in terms of our two political parties, this is very apparent also, with each side blaming the other for what has gone wrong with America. To be sure, there are a few members of each party who try to leave themselves open to dialogue and sometimes legislation is formed.

You would think from hearing all the diatribes that we are our worst enemy.

Personally, I am opposed to bans and think it is a poor idea. If people were permitted to speak their minds without any repercussions, there would be less hostilities and bad vibes.

I am amazed how many people, along with our elected representatives, go back into their cubby hole and ignore what the other is saying. There is an element of Truth in most things.
