You are absolutely correct. Coyotes are cunning, very clever, usually work in teams and yes, letting your dog run off to chase a coyote would be a really stupid and likely deadly idea and not something I would allow to happen. That said, we have many times been “shadowed” by coyotes and also foxes on our walks. Not something you really can do anything about except maybe yelling at them which usually just makes them back off a little. Eventually they always got bored with the shadowing game and just disappear. The one I mentioned in my original post shows a rather different behaviour. No skittishness. No sign of aggression and no, I won’t allow my dog to meet him nose to nose but I am curious enough to let this evolve a little further. Right now he only follows us for a few minutes and then disappears.
