An excellent plan and great to hear since it's what I'd have recommended if even a single HDMI port existed on the old Sony TV, or any old TV someone wants to stream to for that matter.

Not only do you save a great deal of money that way, you get to pick the streaming hardware you want without interference from a "smart" TV with streaming apps built-in, that combo can make even the average A/V techs run away screaming in terror.

The complex settings of the (thin and very fragile) monster screens of the 4K+ OLED variety seem to be the worst. You'd have to be an A/V hobbyist or work in the business to understand how all the features work together and interact for the best picture. Of course the settings and onscreen menus are different between brands, even different within the same brand. It's daunting to keep up with.

The refurbished Apple TV 4K (32GB, 2nd Gen.) with Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi (802.11ax WiFi 6) would've run you $100 + tax at Apple.com earlier this month, but I'm an Apple fan given all the advantage of tvOS if you own multiple units.

They're sold out now, as is the 64GB model, but I think Amazon still has them. It comes with a decent remote now too, the Siri Remote for using voice commands. Apple finally designed a good one, now with a mute button. It's still pretty small and there are good universal remotes out there to handle everything but the voice prompts of the Siri Remote.

The advantage of the USB stick drives from Amazon, Google, and Roku are portability, obviously, but I've found their interfaces clunkier to use overall and less features I want and use. The simple AirPlay setup and its advantages alone are worth the extra money to me.

Please let us know how you like the HDMI switch with the remote. I've not tried one myself, I have a manual push button one I use on my small office TV since I have enough HDMI ports (so far) on my large flatscreen LG.
