My grandfather was an old-time labor Democrat. When I went to the polling place for my first vote at 18 and registered the old guys asked what party affiliation I was registering under. I said "Republican", being a proper Reagan-era Gen Xer. One of the old guys sadly said that my grandfather would be very disappointed to hear that. The other guy chuckled and told me not to listen to him.

But you know what? It was all good-natured ribbing. Better, less venomous, times.
