OFF TOPIC-why andrew is mistaken, yet again

According to "A Dictionary of Literary Terms" by J.A. Cuddon and published by Penguin Reference, it is spelled as I spelled it. That's because I'm using the original french spelling of the term-which you are unaware of being that you are a gerbil and are usually never "outside" much. But, you are correct that it is more common to spell it "entendre." I would guess it was done so because because Americans spelled it as it is heard when spoken.

So now you have two things in your repertoire: 1)that you can be a schmuck 95% of the time and 2) you now know that there are two ways to spell "double entente, un mot a " which is the full saying.
